Edison Elementary School serves students in grades PK through 5th-grade and is home to about 350 scholars who receive a well-rounded education focused on academic excellence and character development. With a Montessori program for Pre-K through 3rd grade, Edison offers hands-on, personalized learning experiences that nurture curiosity and independence. With small-group instruction, tutoring, and creative enrichment opportunities, Edison Elementary ensures every child has the support and confidence to thrive.

Essay Writing Students with Mrs. Christian

Bookstock hosts an annual writing contest for 4th grade students in Detroit Public Schools and DPS Authorized Charter Schools, where Lead Teacher Ms. Travis and Ms. Sharpe inspire Edison scholars each year to participate with outstanding results.

Edison proudly celebrates Serentity, Chase, Royce, Channelle, and Nyla, who each received a Certificate of Appreciation, showcasing their creativity, literacy skills, and strong student voice.

Edison Elementary celebrated March Is Reading Month with exciting visits from guest readers, including DPSCD Chief Jackson, the Honorable Judge Grant, members of the Cleary University Basketball Team, the Michigan Farm Bureau, State Representative Sherrie Williams, and the Dallas Nicole Foundation, along with Edison scholars. Students were highly engaged and excited as they listened to stories, recorded books in weekly reading logs, and developed a stronger love for reading throughout the month.

Edison Elementary proudly celebrated its annual Bunny Hop, a fun-filled event that brought energy and excitement to the school community. In recognition of their outstanding effort and participation, twelve students from each grade level were awarded medals. The event not only encouraged physical activity, but also promoted school spirit, teamwork, and perseverance among students.

Edison Elementary students enjoyed a meaningful visit from a Howard University alumna who read stories featuring African American characters, authors, and illustrators. The experience captured students’ attention and sparked excitement as they connected with characters who reflected their own identities and experiences. More than just a read-aloud, the visit helped scholars feel seen, valued, and inspired. It reinforced the importance of representation in books and left students with a stronger sense of pride, imagination, and love for reading.

Edison Elementary held its Annual School-Wide Math Bee on Thursday, March 12, 2026, where students from 1st through 5th grade showcased their math skills and courage. About 20 students competed in the 1st–2nd grade division and 15 students in the 3rd–5th grade division, answering challenging questions while the timer ticked and the audience watched with excitement. Despite a few nervous moments, students supported one another and demonstrated perseverance throughout the competition. Patrick D. and Chance J. earned first and second place in the 1st–2nd grade division, while Elijah C. and Chase C. took first and second place in the 3rd–5th grade division. These winners will go on to represent Edison Elementary at the DPSCD District-Wide Math Bee, with their classmates proudly cheering them on. 🐝📚

Twenty first-grade students participated in an exciting K-9 Meet and Greet with Officer Tillman and his K-9 partner, Loki. During the visit, students learned about the important duties of police K-9s, including helping officers keep the community safe. They were especially excited to meet Loki and discover that in addition to law enforcement work, he also provides emotional support to people in stressful situations. The visit was both educational and memorable for the young scholars. 🐾
